About Braintree EHA

EHA was holding classes in Braintree from as early as 1974, and a Branch was formally put in place in February 1980. So Braintree Branch has over 40 years of history, with many notable projects undertaken in that time. Indeed some of our members names have been seen on our membership list right from those early years. Do come and join in the fun!

If you’d like to find out more about us, our meetings and events, or are interested in joining, please fill out the contact form.

Meetings

We meet as a Branch four times a year and also have regular sub groups who meet weekly, bi-weekly and monthly.

Our sub-groups are Creative Stitching on a Monday morning, a Beading group that meets monthly alongside the Creative Stitching group and a Patchwork Group which meets every two weeks. Please ask for dates.

Here’s a Recipe to Try!

HRT CAKE

Brenda Baker inherited this recipe from her mother, origin unknown. So, apologies for no acknowledgement to whoever invented the recipe first !

Please Note : The ingredients are supplements for hormone replacement (NOT medically proven) e.g. use of seeds such as pumpkin and sunflower plus soya are rich in phytoestrogens – natural plant chemicals – which mimic female hormones.

Give it a try – if nothing else, it’s a good cake!

Serves 6 – 8        Preparation : 20 mins plus soaking time    Cooking Time : 1 hour, baked in oven.

Ingredients :

  • 50g soya flour
  • 50g wholewheat flour
  • 100g porridge oats
  • 50g linseeds
  • 25g sunflower seeds
  • 25g sesame seeds
  • 25g flaked almonds
  • 100g mixed dried fruit
  • 50g dried cranberries
  • 1 tablespoon of malt extract
  • ½ teaspoon of mixed spice
  • 350-375 ml soya milk with added calcium
  • 1 level teaspoon baking powder

Method :

  1. Soak the fruit in some of the milk, to plump it up. (How long depends on the fruit!)
  2. Mix all the dry ingredients.
  3. Combine all ingredients and mix until it forms a mixture similar to Christmas cake. Add a little extra soya milk if it is too stiff (water, if you have used all the milk – not cows milk)
  4. Put into a greased lined loaf tin and bake for 1 hour at 190 C.
  5. Cool in tin – serve sliced

It can be served with a butter or spread of your choice, with a consumption rate of 1/6 to 1/8 of the cake per person per day. As usual, keep in an air tight tin or wrapped in clingfilm to avoid it drying out – serve with yoghurt or fruit juice, if you find it has dried out a bit.

Suggested variations :

  • Omit cranberries and add ground ginger and pieces of chopped stem ginger instead
  • Omit cranberries and replace with extra dried fruit including some glace pineapple.
  • Reduce soya milk 50ml  and soak fruit in orange juice (1 large/2 small) and add grated orange zest to the mixture

Once you have made the recipe, you will be able to make your own variations – just bear in mind, its supposed to be healthy!
